About the Journal
Focus and Scope
ORNITOLOGIA NEOTROPICAL welcomes high quality manuscripts concerning ornithological research in the Neotropical region, which includes from Mexico south to Argentina and Chile. Papers on Neotropical species in adjacent areas may be considered at the discretion of the editorial board. While the journal has currently a strong emphasis on natural history, all aspects of avian research are of potential interest. Range extensions and first country records of species are best published in national journals unless the findings have broad implications for the Neotropical region. This journal provides open access to all of its content. Anyone may read our content for free.
Peer Review Process
All manuscripts are read and assessed by the Editor in chief which may request assistance from a member of the Editorial Board. Manuscripts deemed to be outside the scope of Ornitología Neotropical will be returned to the authors without further review.
These decisions are not made lightly and the rejection letter will contain an appraisal of the manuscript and (if possible) suggestions for alternative journals. Manuscripts that deal with suitable topics but that are poorly formatted (usually this includes a combination of poor grammar and structuring, failure to follow the basic formatting required, etc.) will also be returned to the authors with a set of suggestions on how to improve the manuscript. The authors of these manuscripts are encouraged to resubmit once they have incorporated the suggested corrections.
All manuscripts that are sent out for review are assigned to a Handling Editor (usually a member of the Editorial board) which is responsible for sending the manuscript out for review and, once reviews are done, for writing an assessment and making a recommendation (acceptance, major/minor revisions or rejection) to the Editor in Chief. The Editor in Chief considers this information and makes a final decision that is communicated to the corresponding author.
The decision letter is accompanied by the comments and suggestions made by the reviewer and Editors. If a revised version is requested (preliminary acceptance or rejection with resubmission) the authors should revise the manuscript taking all suggestions into consideration. The revised version should be submitted to the Editor in Chief within 30 days (although extensions are granted upon request). Please refer to Author Guidelines for instructions on how to prepare a revised version of the manuscript and respond to reviewers comments.
